Oh Panama

People Of Panama

Some of the most interesting people in the world are Panamanians. Panamanians are people who lived in Panama country. Let’s talk a little background of the location and geography of this country. Panama is a natural land bridge connecting the South American continent with Central America. It’s also interesting because the isthmus runs east-west in the form of inverted “S”. The measure or the area of the country is 25,590 square miles. Ethnically, most people of Panama are mestizo (mixed Spanish and Indian). Or, it’s a mixed Spanish, Indian, Chinese, and West Indian. Due to Panama’s unique location and history as crossroad of the world, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Swiss, Yugoslav, and North Americans have migrated and added to this diverse cultural mix of this country.

Let’s proceed to the national identity of the Panamanians. This people don’t consider themselves as former Columbians, because from the year 1578 to 1751, Panama was the seat of real audiencia (court of chancery), with Spanish lawyers, and a governor or captain general. Because of the presence of this judicial-legislative-executive government body led to the building of a sense of independent nationhood. There daily food consists of game and fish as the main source of protein. Their subsistence agriculture never depended on corn alone. The corn is eaten mainly in the form of thick cakes called “arepas” and “maized gruel”. Another dish that they normally eat is the Kuna roast banana which is boiled in a soup dish that consists of water squeezed through grated coconut meat, fish, and fowl or a game meat. This dish is similar to the dish that is eaten by many non-Indian Panamanians the sancocho – a soup of poultry or meat cooked with root vegetables and corn. You could also find Chinese restaurants in all towns and cities, a legacy of the Chinese who came to work on the railroad in the 1850s.

Let’s proceed to the food custom at ceremonial occasions like the upper class families are likely to serve fresh seafood at weddings, baptisms, and other celebrations. One interesting thing about Panamanians upper class is their cooking style tends to be continental. In contrast to that, Interioranos, value beef. Smoked and cured beef with the flavor of ham is their Traditional Sunday meal which is called “tasajo”. About their major industries, Panama never had a plantation economy. But today their agribusiness specializes in the production of sugar and bananas. They are also on trading business.
